It’s not Santa Claus, but Snoop Dogg, that will be comin’ to town this week to stop the spread of violence that has recently been plaguing the city of Boston, which has reached a 10-year high for murder rates. Okay, it’s actually Snoop-aloop’s mom, Beverly Broadus Green, an evangelist minister, who will be speaking at the independently run Dorchester Epiphany Middle School tomorrow. She’s helping to kick off a national campaign to combat violence and gangs, which as the Herald points out this morning, is glorified by her rap star son. She recently created the “Mothers of Entertainers” foundation that includes other moms-of-stars who will be out spreading love and peace around the country. Beverly is truly hoping to make a difference using her celeb-like status. “A lot of children are being passed from grade to grade but still can’t read or write. We want to make sure they get a quality education. We all have our dreams and I’m using my life and the things I went through to reach these children.”
Bostonist has to admit that we admire her for her devotion to helping out local children, but had to recognize the irony of it all when asked about Snoop’s use of violence in his music. “When you raise your children, they go out and do things. I don’t like it and he knows I don’t like it, but that’s what pays the bills.” (We just hope she leaves out that part about ‘paying the bills’ when she discusses things with the students tomorrow.)
