Oh, where to start with this wonderful story? Rhode Island native Richard Hatch, he of "Survivor" fame and nationwide villainy, was convicted in Federal Court in Providence today of tax evasion, having not paid taxes on his Survivor winnings or subsequent earnings eked from his star turn. Following the verdict, Hatch was, as the Globe Monopolistically put it, "taken straight to jail."
The judge ordered Hatch held pending sentencing because, not surprisingly, he was deemed a flight risk. After all, everyone knows he has a bunch of money and the ability to survive ferociously on a desert island with nothing more than television cameras and a bunch of suckers to manipulate. His lawyer promised an appeal, as losing lawyers in high profile cases almost always do, but Bostonist isn't holding our breath. The more interesting thing will be to see how CBS spins the news, if they feel it needs spinning. Bostonist would love to see "Survivor: Federal Penitentiary," next season, but we have a feeling some of Hatch's tactics won't go over so well in the joint.
