Boink gets Booked

boink.jpgAbout a year ago the Boink release party ended with the police showing up, responding to a complaint of underage drinking they closed the party down. So not that type of booked. BU students boinked Harvard and scooped up the book deal. Last year the buzz around town was that Boston University was going to rival Harvard and release a sex magazine. Ok, ok, so it wasn’t BU’s sex magazine, it was a pornographic magazine that just so happened to be edited by a BU student and feature quite a few scantily or less than clad BU students. It may have been racier than the “H-Bomb: Harvard’s Magazine About Sex” (not to be confused with h-bomb.com) and called itself porn but it still wasn’t Penthouse. Boink, the self-declared “College Guide to Carnal Knowledge” is set to release another issue this month, but it seems the real money is in the publicity for this one. A book deal about the magazine has been reached with Warner Books, with a reported six-figure advance.

Bostonist can’t help but love the puns and dripping innuendos that come out of reporting on a book deal for a sex magazine (almost as much as we love “kitty puns” from the Herald). One of the more subtle comes from Ben Greenberg, acquiring editor at Warner Books, “We [at Warner] are thrilled to have it on our list. Boink represents a unique and edgy concept that we expect will appeal to many of those who dare to explore it. We look forward to exposing it to a large audience.” Since the interview Bostonist ran last year with Christopher Anderson, photographer and editor for Boink, he and Editor-in-Chief Alecia Oleyourryk have been working the promotion of the magazine with appearances on MTv, CNN, and Howard Stern (a BU alum) - before he turned to satellite. On this the commercialized holiday of love Bostonist just wanted to talk about porn, and the business of bodies, while we send you wishes of a Happy Valentine’s day.
