Entwistle Back in the Bay State

ent2story.jpgNeil Entwistle, who has captured the media’s attention on two continents, has arrived back in Massachusetts where he’s set to appear in Framingham District Court this afternoon at 2p.m. to be arraigned on charges of murdering his wife and baby daughter in late January. After being arrested at London’s Royal Oak tube stop on February 9, Entwistle has remained in British custody until yesterday when he was handed over to U.S. Marshals at Gatwick Airport. The group landed at Hanscom Air Force Base yesterday and Entwistle was taken to Hopkinton, where he was booked and spent the night in jail. Court appointed defense lawyer Elliot M. Weinstein has announced that his client will plead not guilty today; Weinstein has also been quoted as saying that he would like to have all charges dropped since there is nowhere in the world Entwistle could get a fair trial with all the media coverage.

While the media have been all over this double murder case (with some pointing out the case's likeness to the plot of Woody Allen’s recent “Match Point”), Bostonist has been keeping up with the articles about Entwistle and his web of deceit and lying. Besides researching online how to commit murders and suicides, he was also busy looking up escort services and a sex club for swingers. Oh, and running Internet porn and spamming sites. How lovely. This case keeps getting bigger and bigger, which the Herald points out for us taxpayers will cost the state at least one million dollars.

Yeah, I'm about *this* close to sending an email to Joe Dwinell asking what he wrote about in his blog before this Brit went berserk. Honestly, I understand it's a big story - the biggest since a different Brit went berserk (Louise Woodward), but there are other topics worth blogging about.

The media frenzy is getting really tiresome. It would be one thing if there was actually news to report, and not just logistics. Does anyone really care -- other than other members of the media -- when and where the guy has been moved around or how many people the courtroom will hold? This isn't O.J. Simpson driving around (and thus the drama of what the heck he will do next?!). Local media needs a little perspective.
