The funny thing about Massachusetts politics, Bostonist has found, is that even when we are distracted by exciting stuff like the repatriation of accused murderers/internet smut-peddlers/would-be patrons of escort services, the internecine squabbles keep cooking along. So as you spend the long weekend in reverent remembrance of Presidents Washington and Lincoln, don't forget that today is also the 385th anniversary of the election of the first military captain of Plymouth Colony. With that in mind, here's a rundown of the already-chaotic Mass. governor's race:
Remember Tom Reilly, our capable, poker-faced Attorney General who may well be the worst candidate ever? Well, he's still in the race, and dropping like a stone in the polls. Competitor Deval Patrick has wisely done and said nothing of note in the last couple weeks, letting Reilly hang himself. Democratic Party insiders are scrambling to bend party rules so that Reilly's almost-running mate Chris Gabrieli can get the nod (on the theory that Reilly can't win in the general election and Patrick is too liberal), while some are saying that Reilly should drop out. There's also been talk of other possible replacements.
The Republicans, meanwhile, are dealing with their own issues. Although Lieutenant governor Kerry Healey is the obvious choice to succeed the Romney Sheep, convenience store magnate Christy Mihos could pose a problem for her. He says he's been shut out of the Republican system and is threatening to run as an independent, which Republicans fear might allow the Democratic candidate to win. So they're trying to keep Mihos in the primary system so the Republicans can unite behind one person and leave the infighting to the Dems.
