Governor Romney announced a plan yesterday to hype the business and research assets of Massachusetts to the world, an effort meant to draw more companies, jobs, etc. to our fair Commonwealth. Bostonist can't argue with this, but we think a crucial element is missing: a slogan for Massachusetts.
Sure, we have our tourist slogan - "The spirit of Massachusetts is the spirit of America" - but that doesn't really speak to our high-tech nerd cachet, plus it's been coopted by some army-related charity that helps US Special Forces give stuff to needy people in invaded countries.
Our official state motto isn't too good either: "Ense petit placidam sub libertate quietem" means, "By the sword we seek peace, but peace only under liberty." That's a lovely sentiment, to be sure, but if Bostonist were a high-tech company looking at real estate in East Cambridge, it would hardly convince us, especially considering Maryland has the much cooler, "Fatti maschii, parole femine" ("Manly deeds, womanly words").
So clearly, dear readers, the Commonwealth needs your help. All of the business-friendly tax reforms the governor keeps talking about will never get through the legislature, so our state's economic success will depend heavily on good marketing. Bostonist went to online slogan generator Sloganizer, and it gave us a few ideas, our favorite of which was "Massachusetts? Yes, please!" Our own best idea is "Massachusetts: Wicked Smaht," but we know you can do better. What slogans can you think of to hype the Commonwealth to bio-techs and dot-communists?
Image: Good slogans go nicely with good iconic images. Unfortunately, this is all we could come up with.
