Ask Bostonist: Trivia Night

riddler.jpgHi!

Do you know any cool places for trivia night?

Thanks.

Boston is a bar town and a nerd town, and bars + nerds = trivia night. Bostonist has lived in other cities and never encountered the enthusiasm for boozy tests of general knowledge that pervades our fair city. That said, everyone has different priorities for what makes a good trivia night. Bostonist Katharine points out that a great many trivia nights in the area are run by Stump! Trivia. That suggests that the questions won't vary too much from place to place, so your best bet is simply to find a bar you like for its bar qualities, and do trivia there. Nevertheless, we put the question out to our nerdy, alcoholic knowledgable staff, and here is what they said:

Bostonist Jon: "I just went to one at the Dockside which was a bunch of 'after work people' and the ten-cent wings were sub-par...but we did win a pitcher. The Jeannie Johnston in JP (144 South Street) on Wednesday was a good friend's fav."
Bostonist Katharine: "I used to go to Charlie's Kitchen (in Cambridge) on Sunday nights. Stump generally gives out gift certificates to the top three teams, so I would recommend going somewhere with excellent beer fries (like Charlie's). I never won though. I'm not that bright."
Bostonist Josh: "I've been to T's Pub in Allston and the Playwright in Southie. The questions were about the same, but I liked the Playwright better - the atmosphere was more chummy and neighborhoody, the food was better, and my team actually won second place."

Hopefully, at least a few of Bostonist's six regular readers are also trivia enthusiasts and will weigh in with more suggestions.

I'm a bit late, but for any future searchers...

Thursday nights at the Newtowne Grill in Porter Square. No free pizza like Johnny D's, but $10 for a pizza and a pitcher is still a pretty good deal.

  • Rear Admiral Wiggles
