Media man Rupert Murdoch is ruffling some feathers here in Boston as a Globe columnist reported today that he’s looking to print the ever-classy NY Post here in Massachusetts. Why bother printing up here in Boston, you ask? Murdoch owned the Herald until 1994 when he was forced to sell the paper after federal law said he couldn’t own two media outlets in one market. He sold it to Pat Purcell, who had been running the Herald for the previous 10 years for him and continues in that roll now as owner of Herald Media, Inc. Although Purcell and Murdoch were once on the same team, it looks like Murdoch is looking to take his new business over to Morrissey Boulevard. He’s in negotiations to have the Boston Globe start printing 30,000-40,000 copies a day of the Post and they’ll be distributed using the Globe delivery service.
This of course isn’t good for Purcell and the Boston Herald. The private equity funds that once supported the Herald are backing out and Purcell is looking for a buyer or a partner(s) to help him keep the Herald afloat.
Bostonist must ask why we need to see more of the NY Post up here? Those in need of their daily Page Six and favorable Yankees coverage can still pick up the paper at the newsstands (or free online). And while the Post does have some catchy headlines and disturbing photos, the Herald continuously brings the heat with its photo-shopped graphics and metaphoric headlines every week. Sure, the Herald might not be as slick as a New York City paper, but it definitely holds it own here in this two-paper town.

I won't speak on the merits of the NYPost...or if they should consider coming to Boston. I will say that when it comes to printing a Tab the Herald has the fold down pat. Check out the Sidekick or Thursday's Calendar in the Globe, the fold is ALWAYS off. The Herald seems to find the middle and crease there.
Well
Considering the Herald and Mr Purcell's purchase of the Community Newspaper chain from Fidelity, are on the brink of folding... It is probably a good thing they have the "Fold down Pat..." or is that Rupert trying to "Fold up Pat"???
