Welcome Back Rasta Manny! Just when Bostonist thinks its seen it all from the slugger who is just Manny being Manny, we get a large dose of Manny with DREDS! Looks like Manny spent the off-season in one of 3 locations: Jamaica, Amsterdam, or Ricky Williams' house. Which one? The world will never know.
But, if Bostonist is a true Sox fan, you had to be wondering last night and this morning if Mr. Ramirez was going to show his smiling mug today at Spring Training. On the T, this Bostonist hadn't seen a newspaper or the Internet, so there was a bit of pondering as whether or not Manny was going to be more of a pain in the crack than usual, but alas, here he is, laughing it up, joking with teammates, and pointing at people already and everything.
Ramirez, one of the highest regarded right-handed hitters in baseball history, has been a huge part of the Red Sox lineup for the last 6 years, including a World Series MVP in 2004 (How good does it feel to say that?). He and Ortiz make up the most feared 3-4 combination in baseball today, and it is GREAT as a Sox fan, to see him arrive, albeit a week or so after everyone else. Welcome back Manny!
(If we were getting paid $20 million this year, and they asked Bostonist to work on the moon without a space suit, we would show up early and not ask any questions... so Manny's "on-time/late" arrival shouldn't be too shocking to Bostonist. To be honest, we're simply glad that Manny remembered where the Spring Training facility was located.)
Is it just this Bostonist, or does today really feel like the start of Spring Training? All the personalities are there, and its just a matter of time before David Ortiz and Manny are spanking back-to-back homers for the Olde Towne Team. Spring is almost in the air, and the World Baseball Classic and DAILY box scores are just around the corner. Baseball junkies rejoice!
The 2006 campaign is just around the corner, and man how time flies. Digest this for a second, the Red Sox won the World Series 16 months ago. The Sox are about to start the second season after Hell froze over. Bostonist can’t wait.
