It feels like only yesterday when Bostonist wrote Jason Priestley and asked him to be our date to the junior prom. Unfortunately, Priestley never responded and after many unanswered phone calls to his agent, Bostonist decided to ask someone on the soccer team instead. It’s that time of year when teenagers get into a twitter over the upcoming prom season and two Maine teens decided to skip over all the average boys and go right for the gold: Mr. Theo Epstein himself.
We first heard about these two girls who showed up at Sox Spring Training last week with a homemade sign asking Theo “Will you go to the prom with me?” After watching some of the pitchers for a bit, the B.M.O.C., Theo, walked over to say hi to the girls and autographed their posters, which included a scribbled “Yes!” to their big question. Sure, it might be weird to attend a high school prom when you’re 32-years-old and the General Manager of the Boston Red Sox, but the media would have eaten it up. (This could have ranked Theo higher than golden boy Tom Brady in this city.)
Yet, as soon as word leaked out that these girls were somewhat believing that Theo would arrive in a white tux with a stretch Hummer in the driveway on May 12, the prom dreams were shattered by an e-mail released yesterday. From the voice of the Sox media office:
"Theo appreciates the support, but of course he will not be attending. We were all surprised to see the media coverage this good-natured exchange generated."Alas, Theo won’t be attending the prom but the biggest question is left unanswered: If you win a World Series after 86 years, does that guarantee you will be crowned Prom King?
Thank you to the Photoshopping skills of Jon and Josh for these teen-friendly Theo images. They made our Friday afternoon.
