Worth the Trip: SPOTHUNTERS Gallery Opening Friday

Given Bostonist's recent interest in graffiti and street art, as well as a few connections we have to a certain street art site, there was no way to avoid letting our readers know about SPOTHUNTERS, the newest installation to open at the New Art Center in Newton.

Curated by Caleb Neelon and featuring the likes of Shepard Fairey, Greg Lamarche, Monster Project, and the curator himself - this installation is truly something to check out. In addition, installations@EMF curator Judd Katz (flashback to February) assisted on production of the installation and coincidentally Neelon was one of the first artists featured in that space.

This Friday, March 10, from 6:00 - 9:00 PM all are welcome at the opening reception of the exhibition, a number of the Bostonist staff are making our way over - so you should too! In addition, on Thursday, March 16, at 7:00 PM a film screening of "Andre the Giant Has a Posse" and other suprises are promised, followed by a gallery talk with Neelon on Sunday, March 26, at 2:00 PM.

Including works ranging from in style, size, and subject; the exhibition is a veritable feast for the eyes.

caleb.jpg Neelon's work includes a life-size boat/raft fully painted in bold primary and secondary colors, and filled with boxes striped and checkered with even more strong paints. The "water" that laps onto the side of the raft even display the attention to detail and use of grids prevalant throughout the piece.
monster.jpg In another impressive build, the Monster Project work is partially displayed in a site-specific structure (visible in the above image) encasing framed photographs and photo collages (similar to work by David Hockney) of its work in Boston, New York, Rome, and Providence.
shepard.jpg Shepard Fairey's work is the "altar piece" of this installation - taking the form of massive bills of power players in today's political realm. Fairey is well known for his creation of "Andre the Giant Has a Posse" sticker craze which has since evolved into the "Obey Giant" campaign.
lamarche.jpgGreg "S.P. ONE" Lamarche, founder of the influential graffiti mag Skills in 92, contributes a full-size wall installation to the space, as well as the logo for exhibition. An artist who's work includes aspects of collage, signage, graffiti, design, and text, Lamarche's work can be viewed in both gallery and non-gallery spaces - check out his work with the Dreamland Artist Club to get a taste of his mural work.

The New Art Center is located at 61 Washington Park, Newtonville and is open Monday - Friday from 9:00 - 5:00 PM, and Sundays from 1:00 - 5:00 PM. For directions go here and for commuter rail schedules here.
