Bostonist’s First Winter Restaurant Week Experience

logo.jpgWe all gave you the heads up last month when we told you about Boston’s first ever Winter Restaurant Week. So whether or not you made your reservations ahead of time like we told you to, Bostonist did go ahead and make some dinner plans this week. We headed over to Fleming's Steak House on Stuart Street. Yes, we realize that Fleming’s is a national chain and while we are all about supporting the locally-run joint, Bostonist had one amazing meal for a pretty amazing price. For the standard Restaurant Week dinner price of $30.06, we walked away Sunday night in a food induced-coma all ready to watch the Academy Awards.

Bostonist is all about choices and Fleming's definitely delivered this Restaurant Week with its set menu. When you first sit down at Fleming's, they place a “starter” on the table; this visit we enjoyed some crudite and pita chips with a chipolte cheddar spread and a goat cheese infused with Pinot Noir. It was unexpected, delicious, and free. (It does change occassionally, so run there now if you are a cheese fan.) We started out with the "Fleming's Salad", which was made up of field greens, candied walnuts, dried cranberries, all topped off with a lemon vinaigrette. While we toyed with ordering the pork chops, we settled on what we had originally planned on ordering: the 16 ounce prime ribeye. Cooked just right, the steak came with two sides: parmasan peppercorn mashed potatoes and broccoli hollandaise. While our dinner companion was not too thrilled with her choice of Tuna Mignon, Bostonist could not have been happier with our meal. (Well, it would have been great to have a filet mignon, but this is Restaurant Week and all. We know we can’t have everything.) And of course, we shoved down the dessert of N.Y. Cheesecake, which made us question how The Cheesecake Factory is still in business when Fleming's was so damn good.

Fleming's has a great wine list and even income-lacking Bostonist found a good Pinot Grigio for under $8 a glass. The service was solid and they were more than attentive with the constant clearing of plates and placing of new silverware for each specific course. Bostonist’s favorite thing about the service was the timing of each dish, meaning they gave us those extra 15 minutes to finish our wine before serving our cheesecake. It’s hard to find a place that will let you linger between courses and we highly enjoyed it.

Once we added in our glass(es) of wine, tip, and tax, we ended up shelling out almost twice the listed $30.06 set price. But according to Fleming’s printed menu, the three-course meal we ordered would usually be $59.95, so we believe we still got a good deal. Bostonist thinks you should check Open Table to see if there are any reservations left this week.

Good news: 30 restaurants are extending their restaurant week deals; Fleming's is now on 'til March 12.

Stay tuned for more Restaurant Week reviews. We like to get all gluttonous this time of year.
