Please Pass the Inhaler

180px-AsthmaInhaler.jpgAs a sufferer of both allergies and asthma (yes, we are a wreck), Bostonist never realized how bad it can get for us here in New England until we spoke to friends on the West Coast whose allergies disappeared when they left Massachusetts. So we were delighted to hear of the latest report from the Asthma Regional Council, who declared that New England has the highest rate of asthma in the country, with over 400,000 people being diagnosed in the last three years. This comes out to 15% of adults and 14% of children in New England who’ve had asthma or still suffer with it. While they can’t say for sure why it’s specifically our region of the country, doctors believe that our environmental factors are adding to the problem. It also doesn’t help if you live with a smoker or are obese. Bostonist would tell you stay away from the following things anyways, but if you have asthma, the Council recommends keeping away from indoor allergens (dust mites, pets, mold) and vermin like cockroaches and mice.

(Bostonist also recommends locking yourself indoors and never leaving the apartment when that yellow Oak pollen hits the area. It's brutal.)

I was born and raised in SoCal and was more sick there than here. There are tons of ragweed and grasses to get the best of you, not to mention the S-M-O-G.

I was sick last Spring, though, with my first sinus infection (most likely due to mold) and that was not pretty. But, overall I feel much better here 2 years on.
