Weekly Music Picks: The Aftermath Edition

musicpickweeklylarge.jpg
We're still groggy from the party last weekend, so all apologies for the slow delivery of this week's music selections. Bostonist is still working up to multiple lists, featuring your classical agenda over the weekend because we know you want culture and the rest of the best coming at you on Monday because, well, we know you want to rock.

Monday, 3/27

Tuesday 3/28:
bostonistico.jpgBernardo Monk & Mass Tango
Perhaps, like Bostonist, you love Astor Piazzolla's jazz and contemporary classical influenced "tango nuevo." And maybe you're even hip to groups like Gotan (get it?) Project that mix and mash tango with electronica and downtempo beats. Well then, maybe it's time you heard some roots music. Buenos Aries transplants Bernardo Monk and Fernanda Cajideyou formed Boston-based Mass Tango in 2001 and focus on traditional styles and compositions from tango's golden age ('40s and '50s). Featuring pianist Octavio Brunetti and Hector del Curto on bandoneon (you can never get too much bandoneon).

bostonistico.jpgThe Orb
"What were the skies like when you were young?" Although the Orb's two most recent albums have incorporated hip hop beats and harder edged microhouse sounds than their landmark 90's albums, these ambient house pioneers inventors should wash Avalon in glorious sound.

World Saxophone Quartet co-founder and loft jazz veteran Murray brings his powerful tenor (and perhaps bass clarinet?) to the Regattabar. As a leader, Mr. Murray has worked with a who's who of contemporary and avant garde jazz greats, including Anthony Braxton, don cherry, Olu Dara, Henry Threadgill, and James "Blood" Ulmer (to name but a few). His current quartet features Jaribu Shahid (bass), Pheeroan Aklaff (drums) and Lafayette Gilchrist (piano).

bostonistico.jpgSofia Koutsovitis
The warm, sensuous alto of Argentinian jazz singer Sofia Koutsovitis graces Ryles. Although a NYC resident since completing her masters at the New England Conservatory a few years ago, Sofia is still a regular on the Boston jazz scene. She performs a mix of Latin jazz, experimental, and traditional South American folk music with her octet: Adam Schneit (sax), Dan Blake (sax), Jason Palmer (trumpet), Leo Genovese (piano), Jorge Roeder (bass), Richie Barshay (drums) and Jorge Perez Albela (percussion).

bostonistico.jpgMichel
Camilo Trio

Latin jazz pianist Michel Camilo will do his best to make sure March goes out like a lion, at least in Harvard Square (as the Regattabar's promo notes, "to see him perform live is to witness the energy of a tropical storm being unleashed on 88 keys"). Over the years, Camilo has played with such Latin jazz legends as Tito Puente, Paquito D'Rivera, Chucho Valdés, and Airto Moreira. Of course this gifted jazz and classical pianist (and visiting Berklee professor) is fast becoming a legend in his own right. Catch him with Charles Flores (bass) and Dafnis Prieto (drums).
