Wednesday Webcasts: Bostonist Rates the Soxcast

soxcast.jpgIt's spring outside (um, and snowing?) and the smell of leather, chewing tobacco, and pine tar is in the air. Bostonist loves the beginning of baseball season. It is this time of year that we are filled with enthusiastic optimism. Around June we are usually filled with self-pity and despair. And, of course, come September we embrace blind faith. How better to whet the baseball appetite than by listening to a podcast devoted to Boston sports? This week Bostonist takes a look at the Soxcast.

The Soxcast is a local sports podcast co-hosted by Aidan Tomlinson and Ryan Kell. As the name suggests, the Soxcast is much about the best baseball team in the world, the Red Sox. However, the hosts do spend a considerable amount of time discussing the other local sports teams, the Bruins, the Patriots, and the Celtics. Sometimes, they even discuss national sports news not dealing with our hometown teams. The hosts, Aidan and Ryan, are obviously huge sports fans, evident from their enthusiasm and knowledge of the topics they discuss. Unfortunately, where the content is strong, the duo lacks a certain polish in their delivery. This leads to awkward pauses and interruption of the general flow of the program.

We are sticklers for sound quality. Bostonist has difficulty listening to podcasts with poor production value. The sound quality is similar to what you would expect when talking to someone on a mobile phone while driving through the Sumner Tunnel. Ok, maybe that is a bit harsh, but the production lacks a bit of refinement and care. On a positive note, the hosts do appear to be young, and should learn and improve over time. We look forward to the time when the podcast sounds more like it was recorded at NPR and less like it was recorded using a $15 USB microphone (which could very well be the case).

2-50_1432.gifThat said, we like the fact that this podcast is nearly 100% Boston. And, as we said before, they do know their stuff and we have to appreciate that much. The podcast doesn't seem to be delivered on a regular basis, and the last couple of episodes have been pretty brief (but hey, it was the off season). For this podcast, the brevity and irregularity is welcome and means that as a listener there is little investment required. So, in a (pea)nutshell, Bostonist will stay a subscriber despite the podcast's current shortcomings.

Oh ya, Go Sox!

The writer is on vacation this week, so the offerings the past couple days have been short and not-to-sweet, but scroll down for his longer "strips" and you'll get addicted.

Yah, we have a good mike, but we were so stupid. We had it right next to the fan of the computer, so you can here it in the background and yah, it sounds terrible. But, we fixed by simply moving it, and it sounds better, and we are going to try to podcast more often.
