March for Immigrant Rights Will be Today on the Common

inmigrantes.jpgIf, like Bostonist, you're looking for something to this afternoon between quittin' time and the 9:30 showing of "Night Nurse" at the Brattle, you're in luck. As part of the ongoing and ever-more-newsworthy series of public demonstations in opposition to an immigration bill approved by the House of Represenatives, there will be a large rally in support of immigrant rights this afternoon at 4:00 on Boston Common, which will then proceed to Copley for further rallying at 6:00. The much villified legislation proposes to make illegal presence in the United States a felony, and to criminalize giving certain kinds of assistance to illegal immigrants. Also, it would build a 700-mile fence along the border with Mexico, which gets some people terribly worked up, but mostly strikes Bostonist as a waste of money. Bostonist will be there and will report back soon, hopefully with some pictures. Those of you not wishing to support immigrants (as is your right) should nevertheless keep in mind that the rally may cause you significant delays in getting to where you need to go.

Your title is misleading: The March is for Illegal Immigrant Rights

Not misleading, just imprecise, as headlines are wont to be. (And yes, I realize that you're not really correcting my imprecision so much as making a political point. But what's to say? You're right.)

Fair point, Par, but do note that plenty of citizens and legal immigrants would be impacted too. For instance, the current laws impact a lot of families where members have different legal status.
