Peeps Propaganda

It will be a busy weekend here in Boston. Many of our colleagues have the day off for Good Friday or are just looking forward to Patriots Day on Monday that has seemingly been renamed to Marathon Monday. Between the these two holidays, which don’t often coincide with each other, is Easter Sunday. Many in Boston will attend mass as usual, others will make one of their two appearances at church (the other being Christmas), others will simply be frustrated as they try to go out to a normal Sunday brunch finding that their favorite spot is filled to the gills with families decked out in their Sunday finest (as a kid Bostonist always got a new outfit for Easter – down to new socks and underwear). But beyond the religious significance of the holiday is the tasty candy in all sorts of egg shapes that can be found immediately after Valentines Day until early spring. From snack-size snickers and reeces peanut butter cups with rounded edges to the Cadbury egg (both full size with gooey center and mini, chocolate with candy coating) it’s perhaps the marshmallow Peep that has always been a favorite in our house. This year the Peep actually makes an appearance inside an egg. Wicked Pissah. It’s only appropriate that we take a moment from our preparations for Marathon Monday, buying beer – not new sneaks, and give a nod to Easter in today’s video clip. We took a quick look for some footage of Peeps in a microwave – they do outrageous things while on “high” but still return to their original size. We came up empty. We did find this piece of propaganda footage for the sugar covered treats. Based in part on the infamous Triumph of the Will (or Triumph des Willens if you’re speaking German) it’s a well produced short film.

File this under "don't try this at home": Last year our friends in New York went a little nuts with the Easter candy. Gothamist went out and got some Cadbury eggs, chocolate bunnies, and, of course, the Peeps and proceeded to have a ball with them.
