This Post's Got Moxie

230px-Moxiecan.jpgWhile we're talking about things that have made their mark as official this or that, we've started to think about those things that may not be official but are at least 'very New England.' Take Moxie. Bostonist is convinced that only in New England would folks willingly drink a soft drink that is so patently...punitive.

Think sarsaparilla. With more than a touch of Nyquil. And an aftertaste that sends us flying for some Drano to rinse our mouth with. (Full disclosure: we are not Moxie afficianados.)

Originating in Lowell in 1876, with a distinctly medicinal flavor, Moxie was, in fact, first marketed as a patent medicine, touted to ". . . recover brain and nervous exhaustion; loss of imbecility and helplessness. It has recovered paralysis, softening of the brain . . . "

In a classic demonstration of the fact that there's no accounting for taste, Bostonist knows several people who claim to enjoy Moxie. But it's not like they are downing a six-pack a week. Even fans of Moxie can only take it in small, occasional doses. Like a high colonic.

Anyone outside of New England who has taken leave of their senses long enough to actually want to buy some of this can purchase it on-line at Hometown Favorites. Or you can attempt to approximate the taste at home (although why on earth you would want to is beyond us) by adding Angostura bitters to root beer. For those of us who haven't gotten away from New England, you can find Moxie in most CVS, Wallgreens, and Store 24s - in our experience any native Vermonter living in the Hub can usually point you to the most convenient location.

And don't forget to mark your calendar for the Moxie Festival on July 7-9 in Lisbon, Maine.

there are people who don't like moxie? seriously?

Interestingly, the house I rent in Arlington was owned by Francis Thompson, the president of the Moxie beverage company, back in the 30's. I haven't found any stashes of that nasty stuff hidden around, fortunately.

As an ex-New Englander I still crave a Moxie now and then. Available in AZ

That explains why I saw this at White Hen Pantry the other day. New England is the only place I've ever seen Moxie for sale in stores.

I haven't been up to anything recently, but so it goes. Such is life. What can I say? Pretty much not much exciting going on to speak of. I haven't gotten much done lately, but I don't care.

I just don't have much to say recently. Such is life. I've basically been doing nothing. Basically nothing seems worth bothering with. Oh well.
