When we first heard about Johnny Cupcakes, Bostonist was thrilled to hear about a new shop devoted solely to the art of the cupcake. (After hitting up Magnolia Bakery on our last trip to NYC, we are kinda obsessed with the 'cake.) Then we realized that Johnny Cupcakes isn't a bakery but a Hull, MA based brand of funky tees, sweatshirts and accessories that take the cupcake icon and integrate it into fashion. With a logo of a skull and bones cupcake, this fashion line is sold at certain boutiques nationwide, with a retail store also in Hull. When Bostonist was walking down Newbury last week, we noticed that upscale beauty store Remedix was gone on the corner of Gloucester and Newbury. Instead, the Johnny Cupcakes logos were plastered in each store window and their van was parked out front. The store is scheduled to open Saturday May 27th at 1p.m. (There will be a celebration the night before the store opening at The Middle East with Paper and a live performance by The Chinese Stars. There will also be an art installation by Project SF. Doors will open at 9p.m.)
So after we walked by the store, we recalled hearing about this local designer that was recently copied by the hipster mega-chain, Urban Outfitters. It seems that Johnny Cupcakes approached Urban about carrying some of their tees in their stores. Urban passed on the offer and instead used the design for their own t-shirt. The proof is in the pudding...or cupcake for that matter.
Bostonist is aligning itself with Johnny Cupcakes on this and we hope they do well at their new location...which happens to be two blocks away from Urban Outfitters. A bit of a coincidence, no?
