The Fine Art of Civic Sloganeering, Jersey Edition

Trenton_Makes.jpgBostonist has long found that making fun of New Jersey is like shooting fish in a barrel, except better, because we don't like handling guns. So we can't help but mention the fact that the Garden State has abandoned its second slogan in as many years. The first slogan, "We Will Win You Over," was scrapped by the governor at the time because "it reminded him too much of when he was single and asked girls out on a date." The latest offering, "Come See for Yourself," has already been used by West Virginia and other states. (Are good slogans so scarce that states have to share?!)

In February, you may recall, we asked you to devise a slogan to sell Massachusetts to the high-tech sector, in an effort to help the governor's vaunted-but-substanceless campaign to bring in more fancy jobs and ugly East Cambridge architecture. And just last week, the New Hampshire House of Representatives voted to put the Granite State's belligerent "Live Free or Die" motto on all welcome signs at the state's borders after residents complained about the use of the much more generic "You're Going to Love it Here." (We also like the New Hampshire slogan that local blog Overmatter implicitly suggested yesterday: Sort-of like visiting Idaho without having to drive very far.)

So, dear readers, with New Hampshire comfortably embracing its preference for free life over death and the governor having stopped worrying about bringing more high-tech jobs to the Commonwealth, let us help out a sister state in need: What would be a good slogan for New Jersey? We like the idea of taking Trenton's old motto and making it statewide - "Jersey Makes, The World Takes."
