Lulu's is Lovely

lulu1.jpgSo after Bostonist announced its little obsession with the cupcake on Monday, we thought we’d come clean entirely. We actually ventured to the North End on Saturday for one thing and one thing only: to try the cupcakes at Lulu’s Bake Shoppe on Hanover Street. After we read about them in the Globe last month, Bostonist kept seeing mention of this tiny “shoppe” and how great their ‘cakes are. After a walk through the ever changing and confusing Big Dig, we walked right past Lulu’s tiny store front and had to back track (hint: it’s real close to Mother Anna’s). Once inside, we felt like we had stepped back into our grandmother’s old kitchen, with a 1930s oven doubling as a place to prepare your coffee and old pictures from the Little Lulu comic books on the wall.

lulu2.jpgAlthough they listed a bunch of cakes on the chalkboard on the wall, we went straight for the cupcakes in the display case. While we toyed with getting the professional looking chocolate cupcakes with “Lulu” in white frosting on the top, Bostonist went with our heart and opted for the ones that looked like something that would come out of our own kitchen: white frosting globbed atop a yellow cupcake with those multi-colored nonpareils. (We were so excited about the cupcake, we forgot to snap a photo. Luckily, someone else did recently...see, they look homemade, right?)

So, we sat at the sole table in the place and had our $2 cupcake. While the cake part was a little oily for our taste, the frosting made up for it. Definitely homemade buttercream. A little piece of heaven on Hanover.
