May Showers vs. May Flowers

We all know the old refrain, which is supposed to make us accept spring's rainy weather with a cheery disposition grounded in the knowledge that good weather is around the corner. The problem is that Boston is just too far north for damp weather to be limited to April. Instead, we get a strange overlap of May showers and May flowers.
