Marah (Everybody's Favorite Band)

Okay, maybe they're not everybody's favorite band, but Philadelphia's Marah are The Cheers of bands. They capture and embody the anywhere-hometown feel that the TV-bar brought home, with the exception of Cliffy's thick accent.

A bar band's bar band, Marah transcend the (typical) boozing and banter with solid songwriting and a rounded-out lineup of professionals that promise to deliver the show-stopping tunes that usually require plentiful pitchers and familiar company to get your neighborhood mojo working. Brothers Dave and Serge Bielanko and seasoned players Adam Garbinksi, Kirk Henderson, and Dave Peterson will be making TT the Bear's Place in Cambridge their local hole this Saturday night, with some of the band doing double-duty as Adam and Dave's Bloodline and local Boston rock gal Andrea Gillis supporting.

2005’s rootsy and rich If You Didn’t Laugh, You’d Cry is Marah's best yet, which is quite an accomplishment. It bears their second-best album title, (also an accomplishment): their first LP Let’s Cut the Crap and Hook Up Later on Tonight is holding strong on any record title list, let alone album title lists that include albums comprised of great music (#1: Genius + Love = Yo La Tengo). Allmusic Guide called it "the kind of record Dylan might make in 2005 if he were still making records as good as Highway 61 Revisited, or the kind of record Springsteen might make if he were updating Greetings from Asbury Park, N.J.. Wow.

With a Springsteen songwriting aesthetic and work ethic, and the romantic rock and roll recklessness of The Replacements, the beer WILL be flowing and the tunes will be worth taking home from TT's. And 'Mats fans can wait a little longer for that elusive reunion.
