The Junkyard Moves Into the City

115439122_031fbf2579.jpgFor years, Spike's Junkyard Dogs has been serving up some of the best hot dogs and grilled chicken sandwiches in Allston (and apparently in many locations in Rhode Island, too). Bostonist is excited to share that recently, David Drake's "highly successful" fast food business (named after his bulldog, Spike), has opened another location on the corner of Mass Ave and Boylston (also, soon to come to Davis Square), in the space that used to house Cassave Boba Lounge, a failed bubble tea business. Bostonist used to travel to the Allston location to get our fix of chicken and dogs, but we need not travel far anymore. We decided to try out the new location, and the cheap eats, quick service, and tasty fixins won us over (what do they put in their relish to give it that unique flavor?). Nearly everything on the menu is under $6, perfect for our poor pockets, and the food is always simple and delicious. The Boylston location contains more than can be found on the Spike's menu located on its website (there are tons of burger options on the new menu). Also convenient is that Spike's is on Bostonist's way to Fenway Park, and it's a lot cheaper to stop in for a quick bite than to spend boatloads of money at the overpriced concession stands at the Park. (We are no way endorsing a Fenway experience without Fenway franks and sausages, but we are definitely endorsing saving money). chairman_spike_green.gifLittle Stevie's and Crazy Doughs, two neighboring pizza joints, have their work cut out for them now - competition like Spike's could put a damper on their business (although we doubt anyone will give up the opportunity for the cheap, huge slices that Little Stevie's offers up). Next time you are in the area, Bostonist strongly recommends a stop at Spike's to satisfy your sandwich cravings.

Photo at left, check out the Spike's website, especially if you have interest in opening up a Spike's of your very own.

Spike's actually started in Providence (as did the Capital Grill).

I kind of like their dogs, but they don't have enough "snap" for my taste. And the buns, while good, have so much bread that they overwhelm the hot dog.

Little Stevie's is terrible pizza, it's basically cardboard with spagetti sausce and american cheese

Crazy Doughs is way better, and they have 4$ pitchers of beer, which is another good way to save money since that's $2.75 less than a single beer at fenway

At first glance, it looked like Bojangles had moved into Boston. But that was just crazy thinking on my part, I guess.
