There is something intriguing about snooping around your neighborhood to see what is going in the vacated spots that once housed a locally owned business. In February, many were surprised when arriving at Zathmary’s in Coolidge Corner for some matzah ball soup and the doors were locked, bread in front of the door, with no sign of life inside. The place was gone forever without a last chance to hit up the great salad bar. A few months later and around the corner, the Chinatown Seafood Restaurant was shut down abruptly and it was announced that Finale would be taking over the storefront. Sure, the constant reminder of their desserts won’t help on the walk to the gym, but the Strawberry Shortcake is damn good there.
And after eating a few too many drunken slices at Via Via in the St. Mary’s area of Brookline, it too closed its doors this past year. There have been some signs of life recently with some heavy renovations. It was expected that another Starbucks would be added to the already long list in Brookline, but then there was talk of a Beacon Street Tavern opening up soon. Well, this morning they finally put up the sign making it official. This will be the sister joint to the Washington Street Tavern up in Washington Square. Since we used to live across the street from it, we’ve frequented that tavern too many times to count. With it’s great (albeit not extremely cheap) pub grub and nice selection of beer, Bostonist is a fan and often suggests it to people looking for a good date spot. We’re hoping that this latest tavern venture at 1032 Beacon Street will be just as good, if not better, than the original.

*ANOTHER* Finale? I love chocolate as much as the next gitl, but Boston needs another Finale like Boston needs another Jasmine Sola. Which is to say: not at all.
Just a note: the venerable Pete's Pub in the Haymarket will be having its last night under the old ownership tonight. After a day off tomorrow (Thursday), it'll reopen under the generic Irish pub hand of John Sommers (he of Hennessy's, the Green Dragon, Grand Canal, etc.). We can only hope he doesn't turn one of Boston's last great dive bars into another DisneyBar.
