Keeping a Million Happy

Sunday the Red Sox saw the turnstiles click past 1 million so far this season. The pace is record setting for crowds at Fenway. This year capacity rests slightly above last years number, allowing for the fastest millionth fan to visit Fenway in years past. It was their 28th home bout, just after a walk-off Ortiz home-run to end their 27th. By some sketchy math attendance looks to be about 36,250 per game. Recently bloggers and professional sports writers have opined for the days when the average Joe Boston could a) get tickets to Fenway Park to see the Sox play and b) pay a reasonable price for said tickets. There are certainly some expensive seats, and it's unlikely that they'll be declining anytime in the near future. Business savvy of owner John Henry won't allow for it.
Prior to the one million marker in admission to Fenway Park this season some 36,000 headed out, in the rain, to catch a make-up of a game originally set to be played earlier in the season against the Texas Rangers. After four hours of waiting through the delay (which eventually bumped the scheduled night game to an early slot on Sunday) fans who stayed saw the tarp be pulled off the infield. Dirt was added and the start time was announced to be 5:15 pm. The tarp went back on, the clock ticked past 5:15pm, but John Henry made nice with some fans. In a gesture to show that he was a fan-loving owner he made his way through the stands, from the warning track through the grandstands, signing autographs and thanking fans for waiting through a substantial rain delay in order to see the Olde Towne Team play. Once the game was finally underway around 6pm they declared it to be a Free Dog Night – fans could get one Fenway Frank per person per trip to the concession stand for those who stuck it out. The bleachers had mostly emptied out - presumably with folks who had "moved up." Unfortunately, the dogs weren't quite as good as they'd cut the flow of beer before the game began.
