Rail Enthusiasts be Warned

The Mattapan trolley extension is being temporarily suspended for one year starting on June 24, 2006. The MBTA reports that they'll be making some minor repairs to the six stations along the lines. Major construction will take place as the Mattapan and Ashmont stations will get major overhauls including a demolition and reconstruction of the viaduct at Ashmont Station. Railroad enthusiasts should take note as the Mattapan High Speed line is the last trolley service in the MBTA system to use the 1930's style PCC trolleys. They used to roll along the Green Line's tracks as well, but have been decommissioned there – and as today's video purports the "temporary suspension" of the Mattapan line's PCC cars probably seals the fate of the trolleys as historic relics and not machines in service. With active reconstruction along the line it's likely that the entire trolley line won't have the same temporary suspension the Green Line's Arborway extension met.

  • Thanks for the reminder--I've lived in greater Boston since 1998, currently live just a few stops from Ashmont in Dorchester, and I still haven't taken the trolley. Definitely should do so before the 24th.

Well, if you want to go to Mattapan station from Ashmont it's free - all the time, every time. Inbound it'll cost you a bus fare of $.90. 20 cents might be a deal if you're only trying to escape Mattapan, outbound it seems like a rip-off!
