Schilling Pitches Something Else

schillingpitchals.jpgThe Jimmy Fund has been synonymous with charity in reference to the Red Sox for years. The official charity of the Sox the Jimmy Fund has donation boxes set up around Fenway Park, an annual "triple winner game" at Stop and Shop stores, and annual large donations from the team. Enter Curt Schilling. In 2004 Schilling commissioned a Red Sox chopper, which he sold to Hill | Holiday. The marketing company agreed to put the bike on the auction block to benefit ALS and melanoma charities, but apparently 50 grand was too much for anyone to shell out for Schill's bike. This year he's trying again.

Curt and Shonda Schilling have partnered with Shaw's and Star Markets for a new campaign to support the ALS Association's New England Chapters. Starting July 12th and running through August 5th, customers at the supermarket chains will be asked if they'd like to contribute to "Curt's Pitch for ALS" (as in Lou Gehrig's Disease not the American League Series). As part of the "Pitch'n to Win" campaign, contributions of $1.38 will get a strike and $3.38 will earn an out. The single dollar is a single strike, three of them, of course, make an out. The 38 cents are homage to Curt's jersey number when he's on the mound for the Red Sox. Recognition of the contributions will come in the form of paper balls which will be hung in store windows adorned with the name of those donating. This type of campaign isn't a new one – but with the ever-present love of the Red Sox it could be great a great success.
