In a world where there's nothing to do but watch movies.
In a city full of theaters, museums, and libraries.
One moviegoer who can be in three places at once.
This week's films promise to be festive, well-attended events for their respective niches: Bollywood, science fiction, anime, and self-identified "Brechtian punk cabaret" enthusiasts. Bostonist is especially psyched that Krrish's Massachusetts premiere isn't a day later than its release in India, and that no amount of alien superpowers and special effects can stop a Bollywood film from breaking into song. The truly hardcore can drive out to Lawrence to see a preview screening tonight, a whole day before the film is officially released worldwide.
Friday 6/23
Krrish
Bollywood's first superhero movie has been getting some attention outside of India, with its Crouching Tiger fight choreography and its copious references to Western blockbusters (Spider-Man, The Matrix, and Daredevil are all evident in the posters and trailers). Krrish is the sequel to Koi... Mil Gaya, a scifi hit that's often described as "E.T., but with singing and dancing in Hindi."
Suggested attire: Black leather coat
Somerville Theatre
2:40, 6:10, 9:40 pm Saturday through Sunday, 4:10 & 7:40 pm Monday through Thursday, $10

Serenity
Joss Whedon's directorial film debut has made the transition to cultish midnight movie with unprecedented speed and fervor. Made to bring closure to disgruntled fans of a prematurely cancelled television series, Serenity gives Firefly's wonderful ensemble cast one last chance to steal, fight, trade witty repartee, not get laid, protect an insane genius with the most graceful toes you'll ever see in a scifi western, and, inevitably, save the galaxy from fascist government conspiracies.
Suggested attire: Brown coat, or intergalactic prostitute finery
Coolidge Corner Theatre
Midnight, $8.50

F*ck the Back Row
Curated by the Dresden Dolls' music video directors and set to their music, F*ck the Back Row's fan-made films will be accompanied by a frenzy of vaudevillian live performance, culminating in Amanda Palmer's film soundtrack covers ("expect John Hughes, Pink Floyd AND Disney Classics. Deep Throat? Oklahoma? She’s still working on it").
