Bostonist has mentioned many times before our love for the 'list. ut in truth, we were always a little skeptical about the barter section. Because, honestly, what are the chances there's someone out there who can sand, prime, and paint the bottom of a boat and is looking for a used van? Or someone who is looking to get rid of a crystal ball ('preferably 4" or larger') and wants an 80-key electric organ?
Recently, however, Bostonist discovered a good, easy use for the barter section: small items of low value. You see, over the weekend we found a pair of sunglasses on the sidewalk near our house. We thought Mrs. Bostonist might like them, so we took them home and cleaned them up, and they turned out to be in pretty good condition. Unfortunately, they weren't Mrs. B's style. That left us with a pair of shades that was a little too small for our fat head, and also a little to girly for our macho image. So we offered to barter them for a cold bottle of Fanta, and yesterday, the deal went down! We honestly don't know what the guy who got the sunglasses is going to do with them, since his head looked at least as big as ours, but it was pretty fun to walk up to a stranger in City Hall Plaza, hand him some sunglasses, and get a bottle of Fanta in exchange, without so much as a hello - we felt like some sort of dadaist spy. And we got the Fanta we so desperately crave without shelling out a single cent.

Dadaist spy--that's a great phrase, although sadly opportunities for use are pretty scarce.
God, your post is so inspiring! I adore the idea of barter, but wondered how you could ever close a deal. I can't wait to try it out myself.
