Eating Out: South End Buttery

south_end_buttery_2006.jpgWe first heard about The South End Buttery and their organic cupcakes when they first opened up in the South End this past spring. Bostonist was heavy into cupcakes at the time (now we're intrigued by homemade lemonades) and had heard great things about their 'cakes. Well, we never got over to The Buttery until recently for a lovely Friday afternoon lunch and we were very pleased with the results so much that we were too stuffed for a cupcake. (Mind you, the 90 degree heat didn't help either.)

Walking into The Buttery, we felt very welcomed with the soft colors and white furniture. There isn't a huge amount of seating inside but the outdoor tables help. With a solid list of salads and sandwiches, which are available on white, wheat, focaccia, or ciabatta, we ordered the California B.LT. on wheat; it's your basic B.L.T. with Bostonist's favorite fruit (avocado) added. We also opted for the Grilled House Roasted Vegetable sandwich on ciabatta. This was definitely the winner of the two with carmelized onions, roasted eggplant and tomatoes, with pesto and herbed goat cheese on top. It was phenonmenal and it will be hard for Bostonist to try something different on our next visit since we've been thinking about it ever since. Definitely opt for the ciabatta no matter what sandwich you try; we even bought some for our burgers to sit upon for a B.B.Q. that night. They also serve homemade soups and chili (turkey and vegetarian), which will be tasted once the weather cools down a bit.

On our next venture over to The Buttery, we'll be sure to save room for cupcakes; the Harriet (carrot cake with cream cheese frosting), Madison (vanilla with chocolate frosting) and Simon (chocolate with vanilla frosting) 'cakes are all named after the owner's three dogs. A percentage of each cupcake goes to the MSPCA. The cafe is the most dog-friendly we've come across in awhile, with complimentary PolkaDog Bakery treats for your pooch.

The South End Buttery is located on the corner of Shawmut and Union Park (314 Shawmut Avenue); breakfast and lunch are served daily.
