Weekly Film Agenda: Inevitable Edition

bostonist_film_picks.jpgIn a world where there's nothing to do but watch movies.
In a city full of theaters, museums, and libraries.
One moviegoer who can be in three places at once.

This week's films are full of things Bostonist can't say no to (classic movies with classic martinis), things we couldn't stop if we tried (fate, modern architecture), and the purple chunk of the Venn diagram where those two categories overlap (zombies).

Cocktails! Cary Grant!
Friday 7/21

Bostonist loves seeing movies at the drive-in, but we'd rather not have to fetch our beer mid-movie—alcohol is technically not allowed and, as if by tacit agreement or perhaps ancient tradition, everybody waits until it's just dark enough to retrieve coolers from car trunks in perfect unison.
The Boston Harbor Hotel offers us a safe, legal alternative in its Movies By Moonlight. The outdoor screenings are free, and we're glad to pay by the cocktail rather than the carload. This week's film is His Girl Friday, in which dashing newspaper editor Cary Grants attempts to thwart the remarriage of his ex-wife (and star reporter) Rosalind Russell.

bostonistico.jpgNight of the Living Dead
Earlier this year, the undead lurched through Cambridge, devouring the brains of the living and lowering property values. It's taken them nearly two months to reach Boston (they do move slowly) but they will begin the devastation promptly at 6 pm Saturday, starting with South Station.
And then they'll get a 50% discount on tickets to Night of the Living Dead, followed by a super-secret movie too awesome for the Brattle to reveal at this time.
Brattle Theatre
10 pm, $9 (humans), $4.50 (zombies)

Deconstructionist architecture!

Predestination!
Sunday 7/23

bostonistico.jpgL'Enfer
Directed by Oscar winner (for No Man's Land, 2002's Best Foreign Film) Danis Tanovic, L'Enfer explores themes of predestination vs. free will. A screenplay by Krzysztof Kieslowski (of the Red, Blue, and White trilogy) is enough reason to check out this Boston French Film Festival offering.
Museum of Fine Arts, Remis Auditorium
3 pm, $10

Remakes!
Monday 7/24
bostonistico.jpgThe Italian Job
Each week, the main branch of the BPL shows a classic movie and its remake. This week it's 1969's The Italian Job, starring Michael Caine, followed on Thursday by the 2003 version, starring some Mini Coopers and Mark Wahlberg.
Boston Public Library, Rabb Lecture Hall
