And Then There Were Twelve

xena.jpgShamefully, Bostonist didn't really nail down the order of the planets in our solar system until our obligatory college astronomy course, and then only because extra credit was offered for the best sentences submitted by students that used the first letter of each planet as the first letter of each word in the sentence (our winning entry: "Muchachos, vosotros, en mi juicio, sois unos necios putos"). Now, all that learning and hard work is down the drain, as an international panel of astronomers has decided to change the definition of a planet so as to include three new ones, Ceres, Charon, and Xena. So your assignment, dear readers, is to come up with a new mnemonic for the twelve planets, which go in this order: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Ceres, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto, Charon, Xena. Please help.

Xena has been promoted from Warrior Princess to full-fledged Warrior Planet.

  • Right you are. We can only hope that, provided the new definition for planets is ratified, other names are chosen, like Dukakis. Dukakis sounds like the name of a planet to me.

  • Eighthman

Hold your horses -- despite what is inferred by the Boston Globe today, "Xena" is not the official name of the 12th planet of the new categorization scheme. How about we wait until it gets a real name first? Also, the astronomers haven't "decided" anything yet. To date, a committee has only made a recomendation. It may be ratified as is, or may not. The universe will know next week.
