Avenida de los Helados

jplicksoutsideflagship.jpgBostonist loves us some ice cream. We're too lazy (and full of ice cream) to find the statistic that says New Englanders eat more ice cream than anyone else in the nation. We're pretty sure that our winter intake of creamy deliciousness tops the summer consumption of other parts of the country. Are we proud? Yes. We've got our share of local chains and independent parlors to find our tasty treats – and Jamaica Plain-based J.P. Licks has come out with some internationally inspired new flavors to treat us before summer officially ends.

Recently there has been discussion of renaming a portion of Centre Street in JP to "Avenue de las Americas"; some argue that it should actually be renamed "Avenida de las Américas" – if we're going to use Spanish we might as well just use it. But just down Centre Street from Hyde Square is the flagship J.P. Licks store, serving up some ethnic flavors celebrating the diversity of the community. Coconut Flan for Puerto Rico; Banana Dulce for Haiti; El Diablo (cayenne and cinnamon with chocolate) for Mexico; Mojito Sorbet for Cuba; Pomegranate Sorbet for Jamaica and Mango Sherbet because everyone loves mango. The flavors are sticking around through the end of the month – so you have to hurry into your local shop for a scoop. With any luck they'll keep them around for a little while longer. We can tell you that we're pretty sure the Haitian population isn't going anywhere, and that Banana Dulce is too good to be missed. Avenida de las Américas has a lot of legislative and bureaucratic hurdles to overcome, but J.P. Licks has managed to find a way to keep us coming back for more with true flavor – so can the name change and give us a double. Please.
