A Little Bit of Somerville in Antarctica

The hot days of August sometimes get Bostonist to thinking about cooler climes, which caused us to do a Google image search of Antartica this evening. (Well, actually, that's not true. Toddler Bostonist recently saw March of the Penguins and it was he who wanted to see pictures of Antartica.) We never would have guessed that in that distant land, we would find a welcoming little bit of Somerville. But pictures do not lie, and the McMurdo research station at the bottom of the world has exactly the same kind of decoration in its front yard that can be found in hundreds of front yards in Somerville: a generic Virgin Mary statue. We know this isn't new or newsworthy in the strictest sense, but damn it, we think it's cool.
