Weekly Music Picks: Moving Edition

musicpickweeklylarge.jpg
What's going on this week? Everyone is moving. Hipsters are swapping apartments in Allston. Scenesters are invading Cambridgeport. Undergrads and grad students are making their way into the new rental for September. The lucky ones have renewed their lease (or are keeping up with payments on the mortgage). The music you'll be hearing is blaring from the cab of the U-Haul and out of the windows of that f*ing third floor walk-up you offered to help your friend move into. When the truck has been returned and boxes are strewn all over the new apartment or you've just had enough of packing and need an outlet it's time to hit the live shows. We may not be talking the best week ever, but it's certainly good. Local acts take top billing this week, if you're looking for classical to chill out to pop in some Beethoven and check in with us when the fall season gets underway. Transition in the Hub: we love you, we hate you. We're still listening.

Tuesday 8/29
bostonistico.jpgUffie and 7L & Esoteric
Uffie: grew up in south Florida surrounded by Miami Bass. Moved to Paris to pursue a career in fashion. Hooked up with big deal French producers Mr. Oizo and DJ Feadz and launched a music career. Signed with hip French outfit Ed Banger Records. Electro-pop-crunk. Some say she is poised to blow-up bigger than M.I.A. Others say her rap delivery leaves, uh, much to be desired and she's retreading tired ground in a not so novel way. Bostonist hasn't heard enough to say, but we do know one thing: Uffie's single "Pop the Glock" is a lot of fun. Decide for yourself at Great Scott this Tuesday. With 7L (voted "Best DJ" two years running in the Boston Phoenix Readers Choice Poll) and Esoteric. Also featuring DJ Feadz, Brenden Wesley, and Red Foxxworth.

bostonistico.jpgGoldie & Bailey
Hasn't jungle been played out since like 1998? Well, maybe, but don't try telling that to drum 'n' bass legend Goldie. He brings his massive sound to Bill's Bar with fellow metalheadz conspirator Bailey. This could sell out.

bostonistico.jpgMichael Ian (of Furvis)
A couple weeks will pass until Furvis will grace the Hub with their presence again. In the mean time some of the boys will be gracing local stages with their solo endeavors. Michael Ian will bring his voice off the Furvis stage and into Abbey Lounge for a short set to open the Tuesday evening festivities. Okay Thursday's residency on Tuesday's will wrap up this week – if you haven't caught them yet, let us promise that they make a delicious combination with a PBR.

bostonistico.jpgVerona Downs
A new favorite we discovered not on the stage but on Exploit Boston Radio: Verona Downs. They drop a new album this week and are having their very own EP Release party at TT's to celebrate. The Light Reaction EP dropped last week and is just enough to whet our appetite for the full concept they've promised in the forthcoming CD Family Bed. You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll…aw, eff it. It's a damn good show at a damn good price. Verona Downs takes the stage at 10 pm. Other notable local act Frank Smith shares the bill

Friday 9/1
bostonistico.jpgFinal Fantasy
The Times has called Owen Pallett "The World's Most Popular Gay Postmodern Harpsichord Nerd," and Owen Pallett has called his one-man band Final Fantasy "violin and looping pedal and thin, stupid vocals." Bostonist just thinks he's the darlingest thing ever to swipe a name from an RPG, arrange strings for the Arcade Fire, and sing a song about gentrification.
P.A.'s Lounge

bostonistico.jpgShondes
"Shonde" is Yiddish for disgrace, shame or outrage. And Shondes, a Golem meets Sleater-Kinney with a queercore twist indie band, plays "driving rock music with classical/feminist punk influences, layered harmonies, and politically radical content" designed to "shock audiences with [its] innovative musical style." They are equally committed to radical political work and "getting audiences up off their tuchuses and onto the dance floor." They love a good matzoh ball and they are not above quoting Mission of Burma. With Pelvic Circus.

bostonistico.jpgBang Camero
Push, Push, Lady Lightning is blowing up. The Phoenix and FNX have certainly taken these guys under their wing. They seem to be getting press all over the place and word on the street is that they've got a pretty good video for their single in the works (filming may take place at this show). They've got a great rock sound and put on a frenetic live show. They play as part of the Middle East's Hellbent for Rock '06 along with Taxpayer and Harris. DJ Eric Marcelino fills in the gaps during the night.

bostonistico.jpgThe SnowLeopards
Another fantastic find from Exploit Boston Radio. The SnowLeopards claim to be influenced by a mix of motown and guitar-rock. We don't believe them at all. They surely stole it. Expanding from their duo roots to a full four piece set the group has been hard at work on their live sets. They've got a couple dates upcoming in the area – but we urge you to catch them this week at the Bullfinch. You'll want to tell all your friends you saw them first in the small venue.

Saturday 9/2
bostonistico.jpgBoot Camp Clik
It's hip hop supergroup Saturday in Beantown. The "army battalion-load of emcees known as the Boot Camp Clik" invade the Middle East. No cease fire expected to be announced. So grab a flack jacket and head over to hear some hard nosed hip hop straight outta Crooklyn. Featuring Black Moon (check their classic album War Zone), Cocoa Brovaz (aka Smif 'n' Wessun), and Sean "Jesus Price Superstar" Price (collectively, The Boot Camp Clik). Boston's Jake the Snake, The Camp, JDO and BK open.

bostonistico.jpgLove During Wartime
This DJ set has ADD. Actually it's got 14 different kinds of ADD. The night includes 14 DJs spinning a little bit of everything. The story starts out with these two guys who love music. They love the local scene. They want you to come and be part of their plan to help music make music. All performers get a flat $50 bucks. All tickets are a flat $10. All profits are rolled into a new grant for local musical endeavors – which the group of fourteen will serve as the selection committee. This seems a little bit like buckshot. They're shooting out so much in many different directions it's bound to hit something.
Paradise Rock Club
$10, 8pm - 2 am

bostonistico.jpgTanglewood Jazz Festival
It's not often we're suggesting a drive to Lenox – but it might be the perfect excuse to get out of helping your friends unpack. Now that they're all moved into that new pad take to the Pike and head out to the boonies of Berkshire County to catch a great jazz lineup. Legends Wynton Marsalis and Dr. John play with special guests. Lawn seats are only $22 bucks – and AAA tells us gas prices dropped a whole dime a gallon this week. It's all the incentive we need.
Tanglewood
$22 - $75

Sunday 9/3

They've been with us for years. Guilty pleasure. 'Nuff said.

Sell out watch: Cat Power plays the MFA next week. She doesn't fall into this week's list - but the September 5th show will likely be sold out before we get to the box office. You've been warned.

C. Fernsebner and Matt Durutti put their fingers on the home keys (middle-c style or qwerty???) to help this week's picks.
