We're getting close, damn close, to the start of the Patriots regular season. Perhaps it will help us take the sting away from what's going on with the Sox lately. There will be some new music at Gillette Stadium for this season's home games. Every time the Pats score a touchdown they'll employ a little celebratory ditty. Right now, they're not sure what it's going to be. We're not quite sure if it's more ironic that the kids who are too hip to be hipters at Stereogum ran a story about the poll, or that the choice at the top of the list is the 1812 Overture. Sure, the Pops perform their rendition of the Overture on the Esplanade each year as Boston celebrates Independence Day, but the song isn't historically Patriotic. The song was written celebrating the unsuccessful invasion of Russia by France in 1812. We suppose that the song signals victory for the Russians, but we've got the New England Patriots on the field.
The comments on the Stereogum post show a wide array of suggestions. Some great punk rock tunes, a nod to Jacko's Don't Stop 'till You Get Enough, Ride of the Valkyries all make the list. We're mounting a write in campaign for something with some more local and/or patriotic ties. Boston's More than a Feeling? Aerosmith?. Shipoopi. Isn't Shapoopi the official showboat song of the New England Patriots?
As long as there are muskets being fired at Gillette we're happy. Image of said muskets and patriots on the field courtesy of Flickr user Paul Keleher
