Wednesday Webcast Review: Boston Union's Dirty Water

bostonunion.jpgAnother week, another webcast review. This week we went looking for a webcast that focused on giving us the lowdown on all the cool, hip things to do in Beantown. Sure, we have our finger on the pulse of Boston. Sure, we already know all the cool places to be each week. But, we do these reviews as a service to our loyal readers and not as a selfish endeavor. Boston Union's Dirty Water describes itself as a weekly Boston music and events calendar and that seemed to be exactly what Bostonist was looking for.

Turns out, this podcast isn't entirely about things to do in Boston. Each show begins with discussion on various topics. Recent shows included talk of videogames, back to school shopping, conspiracies, movies, and beer. Bostonist knows that any podcast that devotes an episode to beer has a fair probability of being good. He knows just how I like my martini podcast - full of alcohol.

3-50_3344.gifAs we said, each episode begins with discussion about a different topic each week. We are not sure of the hosts' names as they aren't on their website anywhere. Bostonist thinks they could be Jim and Althea, but we are not quite sure. Jim could use some caffeine, but other than that the hosts are quite good. The discussion of the weekly topic monopolizes the show. Sometimes the time devoted to the movies, music, and food of Boston is extremely limited. A bit too limited for a podcast of "What to do and what to see just in time for the weekend, plus a wide variety of other topics" as described in iTunes. The fact that the discussion during each episode is funny, interesting, and entertaining does mitigate the false-advertising a bit, but we would like to see them include a bit more Boston talk during each episode.

The show is fun, sounds pretty good, and has enough variety to please almost anyone. What it doesn't have is lots of talk about Boston. We don't want to deter anyone from subscribing, we just want you to know what you are getting. This simply is a good talk-show that has bits of Boston sprinkled on top.

Hi,

Thanks for the kind review of our show, Dirty Water. We seldom get feedback or criticism, and never get paid, so your encouraging words mean a lot. Just to let you know, we've recently changed the format of the show so that all content now relates directly to the city, and we cut down on the chatter to a more listen-friendly 15 minutes. Hope you listen again soon!

Althea
