ICA - Still Not Open

NewICA_2x2_8.jpgThe new Institute of Contemporary Arts building at 100 Northern Avenue on Boston's Waterfront is open still not open. They've delayed the opening date indefinitely, but hope to open the new museum later this fall. Originally, when they closed the Back Bay ICA location they'd hoped to be fully operational in the newly constructed building for a grand opening on September 17, 2006. If you've got a calendar handy you might notice that today is three days after that. Still no new ICA. The Hynes stop on the Green Line still bares the ICA name.

Any time we've been down in the area and caught a glimpse of the building it's looking like they may be nearing completion. It's looking less and less like a construction zone and more like some fancy new architectural wonder and (dare we say it?) destination. We've relied a bit on the ICA's website to let us know what's going on with the process, but haven't found out too much there. The Globe's Arts Blog (Exhibitionist) has been doing a fair job of keeping us up to date with the no news updates. Edgers did put up a post yesterday relating two of the recently announced MacArthur "genius grant" fellows to the ICA. Josiah McElheny and Anna Schuleit will receive their $500,000 grant but have also been associated with the ICA. McElheny for a piece for the opening installation, to also be added to the permanent collection, Schuleit for a commissioned work for the Harbor Islands in the 2007 Vita Brevis project.

well, its not the ugliest use of glass and "modern" architecture I've seen, but it does well in the general blandness that is Boston's modern Arch.

it's a smaller, squarer, more hideous version of the already arguably boring and disgusting BCEC

There's a surprise. They didn't meet the construction deadlines? Who in the past has, especially for a gov job.

That's one weird looking building. Hunter Cashdollar
