The Schilling Family Blitz

shonda_schilling.JPGWhy are Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling and his wife, Shonda, going on a publicity rampage? On Monday, Shonda Schilling did a cameo as an "ordinary citizen" when she asked a question during the gubernatorial candidate debate. The Globe referred to her as a "golden-haired society-page star." Turns out that Mrs. Schilling really was playing a part since, according to the Phoenix, she's not even registered to vote in the state of Massachusetts. Shonda wasn't registered to vote in the Commonwealth, the former Arizona voter, is, as of this week, a Medfield, MA voter - like any good citizen she had until October 18 to register to vote in the general election. In Massachusetts it's always a 20 day deadline prior to election day for new or changed registrations.

But the Schilling Family Blitz doesn't stop with Shonda. Now the mister, Curt Schilling, is taking on the role of public intellectual. Well, sort of. He has signed on along with comedian Martin Short, soap queen Susan Lucci, professional reality celeb Drew Lachey, and others to compete on "Celebrity Jeopardy!" (if you want to place your bets, put the money on Short, as he and Trebek are on the same Canadian wavelength.)

It's swell that Mr. and Mrs. Schilling are bon vivants, and it's not as if star athletes and their wives are required to hide in the shadows, but this is a whole lotta Schilling for one week. Here's a few pet theories about the sudden Schilling Outbreak. Perhaps Mr. Schilling wants to be the representative sports guy on "Dancing With the Stars," so he's upping his profile and expanding his voter base. Speaking of voting, he could be building a base for a more political purpose. To put it mildly, he has strong opinions and may like to exercise them after he retires. Putting The Wife out at a debate might be the Schilling Family's attempt at testing the waters. Last, but not least, the Schillings might be angling for a family-style ESPN reality show, "Bats Right, Throws Right, Votes Right."
