Wednesday Webcast Review: The Concert

pod_vasari.jpgEvery once in a while a webcast comes around that Bostonist just adores. Of course, we want to share this adoration and what better way to accomplish this than to drop a review on the intertubes for your consumption? This week we review a 'cast that is produced by the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum: The Concert.

Let us get the geekery out of the way. The folks over at the Gardner have done something great by releasing each episode under a generous Creative Commons license. It seems to us the folks at the Gardner understand performances of these compositions should be shared with and enjoyed by as many people as possible. And, for this, we say, "Bravo!"

Each webcast episode begins with a brief introduction of the piece(s) being performed in the episode. The introduction usually includes a brief analysis of the musical score as well as some information about the composer. This introduction provides context for the performance and makes the listening experience more enjoyable.4-5_5355.gif

The performances themselves, as expected, are all top notch. As Bostonist mentioned previously, the Gardner has done this concert series for quite a while and it shows. This is why, despite the show only being a few episodes young, it has the feel of a 'cast that has been around for a while.

For those of you that think classical music is tha' shizznit (yes, we are lame and we revel in it) and can't necessarily make it to the Gardner to experience these performances live and in all their glory, these webcast will do nicely. For Bostonist, we think its great that we can plug our portable media device of choice into the car stereo, queue up this 'cast, and enjoy a nice autumn drive down a tree-lined street in musical bliss. Ahhhh...

Great idea - the cultural centers out here in Western MA have fantastic programming for the most part, but they're about 20 yrs behind the rest of the world when it comes to this stuff - much to their detriment.
