The Baby Safe Haven law went into effect almost exactly two years ago. Just a few months later we were tiring of the Buh – Buh –Buh –Baby Safe Haven raps that were taking the airwaves to increase awareness of the new law. But then in March 2005 the first infant was surrendered under the law's protections and we thought that the ad campaign was worth while. Of course sometimes a refresher course in the services and rights available is needed. Yesterday, in Roslindale, a newborn was discovered wrapped in a plastic bag and discarded in a backyard.
We don't have anything snarky to comment on this situation. The newborn is at Children's Hospital and has improved condition from very critical to serious. We would like to take the chance to further spread the word that the Baby Safe Haven is law in the Commonwealth and mothers can drop of newborns (under seven days old) to hospitals, police stations, and firehouses no questions asked. The hotline, 866-814-SAFE, will take calls and advise pregnant women on their rights and options. Most of the media outlets are reporting today that the police are now seeking information on the mother if the child discarded in Rozzie. Since she didn't make use of the protections given under the Baby Safe Haven law she could now face prosecution.
