Weekly Music Picks: Tourfilter Edition

musicpickweeklylarge.jpg

There was a time and a place when Bostonist kept missing upcoming shows in the area because we were too busy to pay attention. Along came Tourfilter. A locally based website (now with worldwide reach) that allows us to take a look at upcoming shows based on the information provided by the venue. Each and every day they let us know who's coming to town, where they'll be, and which of our friends are tracking the bands. Recommendations, suggestions, and tracking hits help find out what might be this week's hit that we've never heard of before. Suggestions, of course, are always welcome – and since we first reported on them significant changes have been made to improve the site for the better.

The guru of Tourfilter makes a radio appearance on Boston College radio – WZBC tonight from 5 – 7 pm. Perhaps you can call in and ask him that burning question you've got about the new service

bostonistico.jpgKimonos & a tenor from Madama Butterfly
Liz Perlman will talk about making ornate costumes for the Boston Lyric Opera's upcoming production of Puccini's knocked-up geisha opera, and Joseph Holmes will sing "Dovunque al mondo"--the operatic ancestor of "I'm proud to be an American where at least I know I'm free"--as well as "Che gelida manina" from La Bohème.

7 pm, free!

bostonistico.jpgCassavettes
Two shows serve as prelude to the Middle East CD Release Party coming up in December. Catch the October Preview of the new disc when the Cassavettes take stage at Bill's Bar this week. The full release makes it's way to the music listening world on 12/9, but we're sure to hear what's in store at the cheaper, more intimate show at Bill's this week

Wednesday 10/18
bostonistico.jpgGood Charlotte
Yeah, we've heard them for years. Yeah, they're kinda pop, but still pretty good. No surprise it's an Avalon show for their Boston appearance. They're rocking some new tunes that might just make it worth checking out Lansdowne on a weeknight.
Avalon
7:30pm doors, $20, 18+

Thursday 10/19
bostonistico.jpgMojave 3
In 1994, three former Slowdivers traded melancholy distortion for melancholy acoustic strumming. Twelve years later, they've released an uncharacteristically perky album, Puzzles Like You.

18+, 8 pm, $15

bostonistico.jpgDirty on Purpose
There's a lot of things we'd like to be on purpose – dirty might not might be one of them. Though the name might give us cause for a little bit of recoil we've been enjoying the music for a couple of years.
Great Scott
18+, 9 pm $8

bostonistico.jpgTomasz Stanko Quartet
There's a lot more to the Polish jazz scene than Ninja Tune's brilliant jazztronica outfit Skalpel. Take trumpeter Tomasz Stanko, who's led several cutting edge groups over the past 40 years, including COCX and Freelectronic. Check this living legend of European jazz promoting his new album Soul of Things.

Friday 10/20
bostonistico.jpgMittens
No doubt we heard rumors that Mittens was breaking up. After their show at the Milky Way in August rumors had it they'd call it quits. No such nonsense has shown it's evil head (yet). The pop trio takes stage at a bigger venue this week. But check them out – every chance may be your last.
TT the Bear's
10 pm doors, $9

bostonistico.jpgDel Tha Funkee Homosapien
Bostonist can never get enough of Del. Whether he's performing with his Hieroglyphics crew, teaming up with Kid Koala and Dan the Automator to form Deltron 3030, or contributing to the Gorillaz. Hell, we even love "I Wish My Brother George Was Here." With Mike Relm, Psalm One, Bukue One, and A-Plus.

Saturday 10/21
bostonistico.jpgSi*Sé /a>
Start with New York based singer/DJ Carol C., throw in producer U.F.
Low, and latin percussion, and you get Si*Sé, a septet "specializing
in the fusion of chilly electronic beats with a warm, pan-Latino
sensibility."

Sunday 10/22
bostonistico.jpgScissor Sisters
Neither Sisters nor Scissors, discuss. Break outs with Take Your Mama it’s a pop indulgence with euro roots. No matter that the show is at the grungy Orpheum, even the balcony will no doubt be a good show.

Monday 10/23
bostonistico.jpgBuju Banton
A man with a riddum repertoire greater than anyone to come to Boston in a while Buju Banton makes his appearance at the Avalon to start the week. A dancehall icon, usually reserved for North Shore venues (though we're not sure why) plays a set for the city proper.
