Weekly Music Picks: Pumpkin Carving Edition

musicpickweeklylarge.jpg

There's no good reason to be sitting at home carving pumpkins this week with all the good shows happening around the Hub. Take a moment to put down your $3 carving kit and your pumpkin to sing the pumpkin carving song as you head out to catch some live music. Oh, and if you wear your costume we won't tell.

bostonistico.jpgFrank Black
We caught him solo opening for the Foo Fighters a couple months ago – but he's been back since then, and will be hitting the stage with the band (not the Pixies) tonight he hits Axis in a show originally set for the sister venue Avalon. A smaller venue with more rock? Yes, please..

bostonistico.jpgSkerik's Syncopated Taint Septet
Self described as a "punk-jazz version of the Thelonius Monk Octet," this wild septet included saxophones, trumpet, trombone, Hammond B3 organ and electric piano. The group's name is almost as interesting as its music. The "syncopated trait" was a derogatory and racist term used by U.S. Bureau of Narcotics Czar Harry Anslinger in the 1930s and 40s to describe the "perversion" that corrupted jazz and distinguished it from "good music."
Regattabar, $18, 7:30pm

bostonistico.jpgPetra Haden and the Sellouts
After spending most of the last decade backing up acts ranging from the Foo Fighters to Bette Midler to the Decemberists, Haden takes center stage at the MFA to perform her most recent quirky project, an a cappella-based cover album of the classic The Who Sells Out. This might be your only chance to see a 10-member female back-up choir re-interpret Roger Daltrey's vocal stylings.
Remis Auditorium, Museum of Fine Arts, $20; $16 students, seniors, members, 7:30 pm

bostonistico.jpgThe Killers
If you haven't heard of them yet, you probably never will. New sensation The Killers take stage at the Orpheum for a show we wish they'd done this summer so we could have seen it at the Bank of America Pavilion. No doubt it will be well produced - just try and grab a seat on the first floor or the mez.
The Orpheum, $38, 9pm

Friday, 10/27
bostonistico.jpgSnowleopards
Sweet, sweet Snowleopards. A new favorite found while listening to Exploit Boston Radio can be heard on a couple stations on your FM dial these days as well. Nothing beats them live, except for live with a mere $5 cover.
Bill's Bar, 21+, $5, 9pm

bostonistico.jpgMixin' It Up: Klezmer Meets Swing
The Klezmer Conservatory Band, featuring vocalist/guitarist C. Calloway Brooks (grandson of swing icon Cab Calloway), celebrate the connection between Eastern European Jewish and African American musics with an afternoon of swinging klezmer and jazz.
Berklee Performance Center, $23-28, reserved seating, 4pm

bostonistico.jpgMorning Theft
They're sorta from here. Lead vocals and frontman Rob Holmes brought the band from Boston to their new home in NYC a few years ago – but they're still making regular trips up the I-95 corridor to let us back in on their sound. Their Halloween treat (no tricks) for us is a cover of the entire Weezer Blue Album. Word.
TT the Bear's, $8, two sets and two other bands take stage at 9pm.

Matt Durutti and Adrienne Aldredge contributed to this week's picks

  • Snowleopards sound great!

As a Pixies fan, however much I want to love Frank Black, I just can't do it. His performance on Conan the other night was weak.
