The Scissor Sisters finished their North American tour at the Orpheum Sunday night to a capacity crowd of gender bender hipsters and straight freaks alike. Less than two years ago the band was playing at TT the Bears and beginning to ride the wave created by their disco version of Pink Floyd's "Comfortably Numb." Although the single off of their sophomore album, "Ta-Dah," is getting regional airplay it was obvious that most people were there because of either their first album or just plain curiosity. Replete with disco beats there's something different about a Scissor Sisters show because this is a real band that's playing, not the Pet Shop Boys. Yes, a band that plays dance music with real drums, basses, banjos, and acoustic guitars among other things.
Flamboyant frontman Jake Shears guided a performance that equally featured the new and old material, the result being that "Comfortably Numb" was just one of several highlights of the evening and not the highlight. Boston-born drummer, Paddy Boom, returning to the lineup after a brief illness, did his hometown right and was the last one off the stage after finishing an encore set that culminated with the pleaser "Filthy/Gorgeous". With "Ta-Dah" at the top of the British charts it's entirely likely that the Sisters will be stomping their disco boots in an even bigger venue upon their next pass through town.
