Rent-o-meter – Heading Towards Median

It's nearing November, getting further away from the past September 1st move-in day. By now you're either kicking yourself for choosing the place you're in or loving what you've got. Maybe you kicked on the heat for the chilly overnights and wonder how you're going to be able to afford heat and your monthly rent. Or better yet – you're wondering how you got such a good deal and you're just waiting for your upstairs neighbors to actually fall through the ceiling. Bostonist browsed over to Rentometer earlier this month and dropped in our address and current rental price to find out if we were on par with our neighbors. The result was low-middle compared to the others, but data was sparse but growing.

But the easy to view graphical interface with "+" and "-" pushpins on a Google map mashup was too tempting to leave alone after one visit. Browsing back over to Rentometer it seems they've collected a number of additional data points to give a richer map of your location – or intended location if you're looking for a new place to nest. This time Bostonist HQ hit right smack in the middle of the median range. So much for telling people we were getting a good deal. They don't disclose the precise sources of their information, though it is fair to say much of it might be self identified by people looking to match their rental rates with those around them. (So put in your info to search and they'll record it to provide to future searchers). It's free to use, as long as you don't mind iiproperty.com keeping the information you submit.
