Weekly Music Picks: IPO Edition

musicpickweeklylarge.jpg
IPO might still elicit thoughts of Initial Public Offering for many around Boston. This week it stands for International Pop Overthrow. About a thousand bands each take stage for a short set at the Paradise Lounge before the next act gets up. Ok, so it's not a thousand, but there are at least 40. The festival kicks off on Wednesday with Bostonist favs Anuska Pop and play all week. Each show is $10 and next week IPO hops the Fung Wah to NYC. Read all about it at the IPO site.

Wednesday 11/1

spacious atmosphere of Joy Division with psychedelic fuzz and
Detroit-derived noise." With LA's (by way of the Netherlands) Van

bostonistico.jpgThe Rapture
Post Punk, Punk Funk, Dance-Punk – call them what you like but be ready for what you're getting into. It certainly isn't the end of the world…One of the few acts we know that can give you the wild energy of a punk show and still be spot on with their music.

Thickfreakness! The pride of Fat Possum Records! Bostonist's favorite garage punk blues duo (and yeah, that's counting the White Stripes) and everybody's favorite Akron Ohio band, the Black Keys grace Avalon. The group's latest album Chulahoma, is a tribute to the songs of Junior Kimbrough.

bostonistico.jpgBobby Previte's Coalition of the Willing
Bostonist caught a preview of Bobby Previte's Coalition of the Willing project at Berklee in April as part of ropeadope record's "What is Jazz?" festival (we really liked it). The full project should be even more of a treat, especially since it features guitar giant Charlie Hunter (and Robert Walters and Skerik). II Papas open.

Hot Chip's latest album, The Warning, is one of the freshest electro-pop-dance-rock party albums Bostonist has heard in a long time. The white hot band was recently nominated for a Mercury Prize. Catch them in a small venue while you can.

bostonistico.jpgMonsters Are Waiting, The Changes, Cloud Cult, Little Man Tate
Cloud Cult is the biggest little band maybe you've heard of…maybe not. Our friends at Gothamist turned us on to them at a MoveableHype show, then for shows here in the Hub, and we've all but signed up for the fan club cult. The Cloud Cult takes stage amongst other strong acts in the "anchor" position.
