Just turning 1 1/2 years old, local power trio The Vital Might are releasing their debut album on their own Let’s Get Awesome label. Obsidian is heavy-laden with guitars and forceful percussion, plus a smattering of psychedelia and dance-rock. Lyrical imagery ranges from black birds over black oceans to mundane T rides into town, delivered in modern-rock vocals and staccato choruses. Morphine's Dana Colley plays saxophone on one of the more contemplative tracks.
The band will be celebrating tomorrow night with an eclectic contingent of local friends: The Sterns, perky indie pop from Brighton—the one in Massachusetts, not England, though their music would have you believe otherwise; Fluttr Effect, drama-queen rock with remarkable synth-marimba solos; and the un-alt-country of Girls, Guns & Glory, who are not afraid to yodel.
The Vital Might CD release party with The Sterns, Fluttr Effect, Girls Guns & Glory is Saturday, December 16th, 9 pm (8 pm doors) at the Middle East Downstairs (472 Massachusetts Ave., Cambridge—the band's video invitation literally walks you there). Tickets are $10 in advance, $12 at the door.
