Weekly Music Picks: Ain't No Jingle

musicpickweeklylarge.jpg
This week Boston is slowly creeping to Christmas with an eye peeled to what will be in store for when we break into the new year. What does that mean? A slow music week. The amps and turntables are keeping quiet this year as 103.3 FM spins all-Christmas all the time. Look forward to 2007 and the new year in music as this year winds down and you take to the iTunes downloading all those tunes that the indie kids are saying you need to have in your playlist if you want to be loved.

bostonistico.jpgThe Official P.A.'s Lounge Holiday Party
Union Square's old man bar/laid-back indie venue has been the setting of many fine performances this year—even when the few chairs are taken, or the air conditioning fails, or Final Fantasy loses a contact lens. Their holiday party lineup includes B.J. Snowden, Headband, and Jamaica Plain's loudly experimental Gondoliers (one of whose binary-numbered members you may have seen in buoyantly acoustic Joy). The P.A.'s site states that the price of admission "includes complimentary 'Holiday Cheer' from 9pm – 12pm." Is that what the kids are calling PBR these days?
P.A.'s Lounge (345 Somerville Ave., Somerville), 21+, 8:30 pm, $10

bostonistico.jpgThe Persuasions Holiday Celebration
The legendary Persuasions, "the undisputed heavyweight champions of a cappella," have been churning out a mix of gospel, soul, pop, and doo-wop since the '60s. Famously "discovered" by Frank Zappa (who signed them to his label after hearing them "audition" over the phone), the Persuasions albums include A Street Corner Symphony and Spread the Word (they also recorded a Zappa tribute album after Frank's death). Hear the group, which includes three of the original five members, perform holiday classics a cappella Persuasions style.
