Finneran is the New Radio Star

There’s something about the AM dial. It remains an important medium for all sorts of talk radio and sports, but still gets fuzzy anytime you’re too close to power lines or transformers. Even the MP3 players that include a radio tuner don’t include AM, it’s all frequency modulation, all the time. But for the faithful of the amplitude a new, old, familiar voice will be taking the airwaves in mid-February. On Sunday the Herald told us to hold our breath. Today we can exhale as the deal has been sealed. The artist formerly known as Mr. Speaker will be taking over the 6 to 10 am morning show on AM 680 WRKO. You may now know him now as Justice Obstructer #1 Tommy Finneran.

Last Friday Tom Finneran plead out a deal that allowed the charges of perjury to be dropped in exchange for a guilty plea on obstruction charges – letting Finneran walk with a fine, some restrictions on his political life (which was essentially dead anyway). Once the most powerful man in Massachusetts politics, Finneran has been officially disgraced (the Herald loves to call him “convicted felon Tom Finneran”), lost his $400,000 job as top man for the biotech lobby (with a meager severance of $100k+) but has bounced, ever so quickly, into a job spinning politics and talk on the radio. He’ll take the slot over for Scott Allen Miller who will reportedly be moving to a market outside of Boston for WRKO’s parent station. The Finneran show will fill in some of the time left vacant after the firing of John “Grace Ross is a Fat Lesbian” DePetro. We’re sure there will be much to follow about the Finneran installation at WRKO in the coming month before he takes to the air. It’s likely that the proponents of ‘RKO keeping some of it’s conservative tendencies on the AM dial won’t be toning it down anytime in the near future as a Democrat takes over the morning show. The push to Save WRKO marches on.
